Writing fiction is a work of love. I dabble in poetry and love to read short stories when I have the time. I’m actually grateful for all those marvelous writers who devote their lives to bring us the kind of fiction that reflects the majesty and beauty of life. Reading a Raymond Carver, Richard Ford or Mary Gaitskill story while I sip my cup of tea is how I define “good life.”
Having admitted that, I have to remind this too — fiction is not the rational and logical way to go if you’re trying to live by the sweat of your brow and take care of your family in the process.
One particular form of fiction writing that I’m rather familiar with, screenplay writing, is madness itself for those writers who would like to make a comfortable living while doing what they love to do.
The numbers don’t lie. According to the figures provided by Hollywood Writers Guild, (are you ready for this?) there were more LOTTERY WINNERS in California who made $1 million or more than screenwriters!
To me that’s nothing short of SHOCKING… It’s like a (bad) joke…
The Guild discovered that, over a 10-year period, more millionaires have been created by winning the California State Lottery than from screen writing.
To be precise, 1333 people had won lottery jackpots $1 million or more, while only 393 people had made a million dollars from their film scripts (SOURCE: Michael Allen, The Truth About Writing).
The Guild once asked its members how much money they were making. It turned out that two-thirds of them were making $1000 or less a year from their screen writing efforts!
Even if you may be unemployed right now have faith in your future as a technical communicator. In the long run you will make much more than 90% of all fiction and screen writers and you won’t have to rely on lottery tickets for your livelihood either.
