Test Your General Technical Writing Knowledge

Here is a test designed by Prometric, Inc. of Delaware to test the technical writing knowledge of college students who have taken a technical writing course.

Obviously, the kind of course the students take matters a lot and influences the outcome of the test but still the questions here are general enough to make sense in terms of measuring an “average knowledge” of the field.

Here is a sample question:

Which of the following graphics is best for displaying continuous change over time?

(a) Bar Chart

(b) Line Graph

(c) Schematic Diagram

(d) Table

A technical writer should be able to answer such a  question correctly no matter which course(s) he/she has (or has not) taken in the past.

All the correct answers are provided at the end of the test.
