MS Word can use a lot of resources and thus slow down if your “background repagination” option is turned on.

If you are working on a long document and if you feel MS Word is not responding quickly to your commands, you might try disabling background repagination.

For MS Word 2007:

  1. Make sure your Word document is NOT in Print Layout view. (“Enable background repagination” check-box is disabled in the Print Layout view.)
  2. Click the Office button and select Word Options.
  3. In the left navigation bar, select the Advanced group of options.
  4. In the General group of options, clear the check box in front of the “Enable background repagination” option and disable it.
  5. Click OK.

For MS Word 2010:

  1. Make sure your Word document is NOT in Print Layout view. (“Enable background repagination” check-box is disabled in the Print Layout view.)
  2. Click the File tab on the ribbon and select Options.
  3. In the left navigation bar, select the Advanced group of options.
  4. In the General group of options, clear the check box in front of the “Enable background repagination” option and disable it.
  5. Click OK.
