Amazon Kindle Singles — Revival of the “Long Form” Book Publishing

Do you have a “small book” in you? Something longer than an average blog post or magazine article but shorter than a full 60,000 to 100,000 word book? Something perhaps in the 5,000 to 30,000 word range? Then Amazon Kindle Singles might be the perfect solution for you.

In what’s hailed as the “revival of the long form”, Kindle Singlespresent an opportunity for both fiction and non-fiction writers alike. The only kind of books Amazon won’t accept at the time are how-to manuals, public domain works, reference books, travel guides, or children’s books. There are about a dozen authors now, some previously-unknown first-time writers, who have sold over a million Kindle Singles within a year.

Kindle Singles are different from the regular Kindle ebooks in several ways:

(1) You cannot just go ahead and publish a Kindle Single on your own. You need editorial approval first.

(2) You cannot price a Kindle Single ebook over $9.99. But in return, you are paid 70% royalty even if it’s priced under $2.99. (Try publishing a book with the traditional publishing houses, a book priced at $3, and getting paid a full $2.10 royalty for every copy sold… Good luck!)

(3) Once accepted, Amazon heavily advertizes your Single the first week it’s published. Some writers claim that’s worth a couple thousand book sales right there.

So perhaps you want to take a break from writing technical manuals and you’d like to recount your childhood, or write a lengthy piece on a social issue that bothers you? Perhaps you’d like to share your eventful journey to the North Pole, or New York City?… Kindle Singles might be the quickest way to reach your readers and build up a fan base. Worth a look.
