I feel so honored that I won STC Washington D.C. Baltimore Chapter’s “Excellence Award” for my technical documentation “NetAXS-123 Video Kit Startup and Installation Guide Set.” I’d like to thank especially the judges of the competition. Their detailed feedback was very instructive and educational in bringing up to the level of awareness many things we technical writers do on “auto pilot” when generating a document but are not necessarily aware of them. At some point our training and experience just takes over. It has been very useful for me to reflect on all things I’m doing and yet still need to do in order to improve my documentation even further.
Ribbons, accolades and the applause are of course great. There is no need in denying that. But the educational opportunity this competition provides through judges’ comments alone is worth the entrance fee of this well-established annual contest. I encourage all technical communicators to take part in this event this year. The contest starts sometime in September 2014. Be watching this blog or the STC WDCB site.
