This is Where Technical Writers Work

The list I provide in this post can have an impact on your future because it reveals where technical writers work today.

There are 4 basic types of writing:

1) DRAMATIC writing aims to MOVE people.

2) BUSINESS writing aims to ADMINISTER and MANAGE them.

3) COPY writing aims to SELL to the people.

4) TECHNICAL writing aims to INSTRUCT people.

Tech writers work in all kinds of different environments.

Here is a shortlist of the sectors where technical writers work:

  • Industrial manufacturing
  • Federal and state government
  • Medicine and pharmacology
  • Banking, finance, insurance, investment
  • Computer software, hardware, networking
  • Security access
  • Military and defense
  • The energy sector (carbon-based, hydro, nuclear, green, renewable)
  • Education and training
  • Advertisement, sales, and marketing
  • Transportation
  • Telecommunication
  • Training and education
  • etc.

In short, if you see a product or service around you, the chances are a technical writer was involved in writing its manual, FAQ, quick installation guide, customer service manual, etc.

My own specialty is software documentation which covers and overlaps with hardware, networking, and security access documentation as well.

There will never be enough technical writers in the world to satisfy the total demand — especially in major metropolitan areas.
